Shaping our digital future with the first EU Open Data Days

Three weeks ago, we hosted the first-ever EU Open Data Days, combining the EU DataViz conference and the annual EU Datathon. The 3-day event attracted well over 2.000 registrations from data enthusiasts, data visualisation experts and solution-seekers.

Day 1 explored open data as a key enabler of digital transformation, inviting participants to discover challenges and benefits of reusing data and making it interoperable. Day 2 centred on data visualisation, exploring internationally successful data visualisation projects, together with the latest trends in the field. The EU Open Data Days closed with the finals of EU Datathon. We are excited to announce The Carbons, ITER IDEA, and TrackMyEU as the 1st prize winners of the challenges ‘A European Green Deal’, ‘An economy that works for people’ and ‘A Europe fit for the digital age’.

Missed the event or want to have another look at some of the sessions? You can now find the recordings and presentations on the event website.

The data.europa academy

Interested in learning the basics about open data? Aiming to step up to the next level of high-quality data publication? Curious about geospatial data, open licences, or metadata vocabularies? Or wondering how to become more data literate?

The data.europa.eu academy can help you to become more knowledgeable about open data and to become more data literate. It provides you with knowledge and tools to publish high-quality open data that lives up to legal and technical standards, whether you are an expert or just getting started.

To help you find the right course, the curriculum is structured around four themes: policy, impact, technology, and quality. You can find online training courses and workshops but also reading materials, tools, and videos.

Explore the academy and give us your feedback.

The geospatial data training

To kick-off the data.europa academy, we held the first training session on 29 September, introducing geospatial data.

In the webinar, data.europa.eu’s Antje Kügeler and Simon Jirka answered questions such as:

  • What is geospatial data and how to find it on data.europa.eu?
  • Where does the data come from?
  • How can the data be accessed and used in terms of formats and delivery mechanisms?
  • Can geospatial information be added to non-geospatial data and is there a benefit to that?

You can now find the recording of this training on our YouTube channel or discover the course on the academy.

Open Data Maturity report 2021

Last week, we published the annual Open Data Maturity report. This assessment measures how well European countries are doing in terms of open data development and provides recommendations for how to improve.

This year’s assessment shows that European countries are becoming more mature across the board. The EU27 countries scored 81% on average on open data maturity. France received the highest score for the first time with 97,5%.

In general, the assessment finds that understanding, monitoring, and measuring the impact of open data is becoming more prominent. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to highlight this trend.

Curious to find all results and see how your country is performing? Have a look at the dashboard or read the report!

In February, we host a webinar showing some of the open data best practices we see in this year’s assessment. Stay tuned via the data.europa academy and the news section on data.europa.eu for more details or follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
