Embracing global education: Marking the International Day of Education

The role of open data in shaping a peaceful and educated world

24 January is observed globally as the International Day of Education, a day dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the role of education in advancing development, peace, and equality. Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018, this day urges us to reflect on education's transformative power and our collective duty to promote and enhance learning opportunities for all. The theme for this sixth International Day of Education is “Learning for Lasting Peace.”

Disparity in education quality and access is a significant global concern. UNESCO’s statistical data highlights a stark reality: over 250 million children are out of school, with marginalised communities and underdeveloped regions being the most affected. This inequality in educational opportunity is a barrier to lifting countless individuals out of poverty and building a future of hope and prosperity. The theme for 2024, “Learning for Lasting Peace,” is particularly resonant in a world increasingly marred by violence, discrimination, and social unrest. Education is not only about academic learning; it's a tool for peacebuilding, promoting understanding and respect across diverse communities.

As we celebrate the International Day of Education, the importance of open data should be recognised in shaping educational policies and practices. Data.europa.eu offers over 4,000 datasets on education, ranging from public funding specifics to child participation rates. The platform provides a large amount of information that can guide policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in making informed decisions. Furthermore, our data.europa academy  provides a wealth of resources, including practical guides, webinars, and e-learning modules, designed to be accessible to everyone throughout their educational journey. Let this day be a call to action for all of us to explore these resources, advocate for educational reforms, and collaborate towards a future where education is a shared priority.
